Book Review: A KINGDOM'S FALL by Douglas R. Brown

Title: A Kingdom’s Fall
Series: The Light of Epertase, #2
Author: Douglas R. Brown
Publisher: Rhemalda Publishing (August 1, 2012)
Format: eARC Novel
Source: Publisher
Genre: Epic Fantasy

That which survives the initial assault may yet die from the infection left behind.

In the destroyed country of Lithia, the former Gildonese leader of the Lowlands, King Fice, has violently assumed the throne, filling the void left by the Tek destruction of the country. His unnatural powers of sway have become more potent and his influence is far-reaching.

The Tek invasion has also left a void within the kingdom of Epertase. The war has tested the once-great people and, with the venomous words of men Queen Alina considers friends, Epertase descends into revolution. Alina barely escapes with her life.

Once again, the kingdom needs a savior.

And once again Rasi will be forced to unleash the darker part of himself in order to save the woman he loves.

All is not what it seems. Victory may still mean defeat. The war for Epertase has only begun.

Review: A Kingdom’s Fall by Douglas R. Brown grips the reader from page one and doesn’t let up even at the very end.

After defeating the Teks, Queen Alina thought she would slip into her new reign easily, but what she doesn’t know could destroy not only herself but her kingdom and everyone she loves. Rasi wants to live a peaceful life on his parents’ farm, but the upcoming battle might be too great for this war hero. As civil unrest boils to a full-out battle, both may discover the fight for Epertase is too much than they can handle.

A Kingdom’s Fall picks up a few months after Legends Reborn. The novel easily pulls the reader back into the kingdom of Epertase and its surrounding lands. Brown plays on the readers’ love for the characters, and I found myself worrying about them and holding my breath much of the time I read this book. The plot is dark, slightly vicious, and fast-paced. Anything can happen in this new world order, and I was hooked until the very end.

Douglas R. Brown’s A Kingdom’s Fall is a must read for any fantasy enthusiast. I can’t wait to read book three!

So cold.
Tired.
The pain seemed to let up a little, or he’d simply become used to it.

On the eastern edge of the town of Parsons was a tiny community of average people living very average lives. As a whole, the people of Silo had no particular goals in life, but rather embraced their peaceful, slow-paced existences.

Book Review: LEGENDS REBORN by Douglas R. Brown

Title: Legends Reborn
Series: The Light of Epertase, #1
Author: Douglas R. Brown
Publisher: Rhemalda Publishing (July 19, 2011)
Format: PDF Novel
Source: Publisher
Genre: Epic Fantasy

Since the dawn of time, the Light of Epertase has determined when the throne was to be passed from elder to heir. For more than a thousand years, the Light's decision had never been challenged-until now. When a ruthless army advances on Epertase, the Light determines that corrupt King Elijah is no longer fit to rule and his daughter, Princess Alina, is the kingdom's only hope for salvation. When evil men violently abduct her, Epertase's fall appears inevitable. But all is not lost, for Alina has a secret lover lurking in the outer mountains; a long-banished warrior willing to bring down armies and King Elijah himself to save her. His name is Rasi and he prepares for blood. Deadly men plan to sacrifice Alina for the Light of Epertase that lives within her soul. Rasi plans to kill all who try. The kingdom's fate hangs in the balance.

Review: Douglas R. Brown expertly crafts a complex and fascinating epic fantasy in Legends Reborn.

Rasi is tired of war, even though he’s up for the captain’s position of the Epertasean army. On the night he decides to reject the position, he witnesses a horrific attack upon a young woman. Now sentenced to die for her death, he must find a way to survive because Epertase doesn’t know that it needs him to survive the growing threat upon the horizon.

Legends Reborn drew me into the rich fantasy world of Epertase. The characters are well-developed and aren’t always quite what they seem with their agendas. The complexity of the worldbuilding felt realistic and reminded me of how the Native Americans (Epertase) must’ve viewed the Europeans (Teks). Yet Brown does a fantastic job to keep the reader in the moment and not bogging the reader down with the backstory and worldbuilding. I cared about these characters and what would happen to them.

Legends Reborn by Douglas R. Brown is epic fantasy at its best. I look forward to reading book two, A Kingdom’s Fall.

"I promised you the music your father wrote, my dear, and while I wouldn't presume to ask you to play it now, as you've only just seen it, might I prevail upon you to play something else?" His eyes were pleading.

Book Review: KING'S CHAMPION by Cas Peace

Title: King’s Champion
Series: Artesans of Albia, #2
Author: Cas Peace
Publisher: Rhemalda Publishing (August 1, 2012)
Format: eARC Novel
Source: Publisher
Genre: Epic Fantasy

After surviving brutal torture and escaping from Lord Rykan’s dungeons, Major Sullyan is trapped in Andaryon, too injured to cross the Veils. Slowly dying and determined to find some purpose in the shattered remains of her life, she travels to the Andaryan capitol to offer the Hierarch her sword and Artesan gifts in the fight against Rykan and his vast army. Because women hold no power in Andaryon, Sullyan is met with prejudice, hostility, and suspicion.

Before she can seek vengeance on the field of battle, she must prove herself to the Hierarch’s generals. Finding support from the unlikeliest sources, Sullyan sets a plan into motion to defeat Lord Rykan and end his bid for the throne. The fate of two realms depends on her success, but her strength is fading fast and time is running out.

Review: Cas Peace’s King’s Champion, the second book in the Artesans of Albia, is a must-read for fantasy fans.

With the help of her friends, Major Sullyan escapes the brutal torture from Lord Rykan’s hands. But trapped in Andaryon and slowly dying, she finds her purpose to help the Hierarch and become the King’s Champion in a battle against her foe. But to save two worlds, it might cost her more than she knows.

King’s Champion picks up the storyline right after King’s Envoy, which I read a year ago. Peace does a fantastic job at sprinkling in enough backstory to help a reader jump into book two. New characters appear along with our old favorites, and I loved how we go deeper into the world of Andaryon. The setting is amazing and fantastical. The writing is beautiful and pulls the reader deeper into the story and characters. They become your friends, and I forgot I was reading a book and not living with them.

King’s Champion by Cas Peace builds upon her fantastic fantasy series. At the end, I screamed, “Nooooo!” and can’t wait to pick up book three.

THE TREASURES OF CARMELIDRIUM by N.R. Williams

Title: The Treasures of Carmelidrium
Author: N.R. Williams

Book Description: When a hooded man steps in front of her car, Missie is thrust through a portal into a medieval world where she encounters monsters and mythical creatures. Here, her flute has magical powers to heal and destroy and to empower "The Treasures of Carmelidrium." She is romanced by a prince and hunted by the villain. Will she find her way home? Does she want to?

Review: N.R. Williams' The Treasures of Carmelidrium yanks the reader into the fantastical, Medieval-like world of Gil-lael. Michelle "Missie" Kersten is a flutist a few classes away from graduating when she crashes into another world. Valiant Prince Healden comes across of her. The two are linked to King Carmel and Queen Lysandra, and history repeats itself as Missie and Healden fight against Renwyck, Lord of the Symberveen, and for love and peace for Gil-lael and themselves. With giant eagles, elves, and a vast history within this world, the novel is almost Tolkien-esque in places. Then, there are the unicorns and Ms. Williams' mythical creation of the symberveen, a bear-like monster that fills its victims with psychological horrors. To me, the symberveen are an excellent addition to legendary beasts. Friendship, betrayal, love, and hate play major parts in The Treasures of Carmelidrium. Music, magic, and war entwine, and in the end, new beginnings blossom. I look forward to the sequel.
